The following is the ideal itinerary for the Chunli Lake trip to make the most of the area and enjoy the trek. It can be compressed, cutting short the days either side of the trek and leaving out some day trips.

  1. -Arrive in Chengdu (Sichuan, China, Resident Pop: 2,341,100, Elevation: 503m)

  2. -Bus from Airport to Hotel

  3. Meals together (intro to the delightful cuisine of Sichuan!)

  4. Accommodation if not requested otherwise will be 3 star standard, however full range is available (basic to 5 star)

Itinerary

  1. -Leave Chengdu EARLY! 5:00 am (ready at 4:30 to pack bus)

  2. Lunch in Maoxian town (Qiang area, Elevation: 1570m)

  3. -Arrive Heishui Town (Tibetan area, Elevation: 2360m)

  4. Dinner in Heishui

  5. Accommodation in Heishui is good (2-3 star)

  1. -Relax in Heishui Town ‘Acclimatization Day 1’

  2. Into to Heishui town with chance to meet local people and shop!

  3. Meals in Heishui

  4. Accommodation in Heishui same place as previous night.

  1. -Day Trip to Dagu Glassier  ‘Acclimatization Day 2’

  2. Dagu Glassier has been opened to the public since May 2008 there is a cable car to the glassier (Elevation 3800m - 5100m)

  3. Lunch on the road

  4. Dinner back in Heishui

  5. Accommodation in Heishui same place as previous night.

  1. -Leave HS to Kalong gou ‘Acclimatization Day 3’

  2. Kalong gou is a national park opened in 2004. rocky mountains, pine forests, crystal clear rivers, and fascinating volcanic and mineral deposits.

  3. Lunch on the road or in the park.

  4. before dinner we meet the horse guides and have dinner with them

  5. Dinner and Night in Kalong Zhen (Elevation: 2640m)

  6. Accommodation in Kalong zhen is basic but clean!

  1. Trek Day 1:

  2. -Morning spent getting ready and packing up the horses

  3. Lunch in Kalong zhen (with the horse guides)

  4. -2:00 pm Leave for Camp 1

  5. A very easy walk along a river, not steep, broad path.

  6. -Arrive Camp 1 - 4:00 pm (Elevation: 2935m)

  7. Dinner at Camp 1

  8. Accommodation in tents

  1. Trek Day 2:

  2. Breakfast 7:00 am

  3. -Pack up and start Trekking 9:00 am

  4. This is a hard day of uphill walking with all but the last 20 min’s uphill! most of the walk is in pine forest and on grass hillsides.

  5. Lunch 12:30 pm

  6. -Arrive Camp 2 - 4:00 pm (Elevation: 3540m)

  7. Dinner after set up 6:00 pm

  8. Accommodation in tents

  1. Trek Day 3:

  2. Breakfast 7:00 am

  3. -Pack up and start Trekking 9:00 am

  4. Another hard long day of trekking! starts steep, then follows a ridge steadily up to about 4000m then a consistent traverse round to camp 3.

  5. Lunch 12:30 pm (on the track)

  6. -Arrive Camp 3 - 4:00 pm (Elevation: 3995m) the camp site is just below Chunli Lake with an incredible view of the valleys below.

  7. Dinner after set up 6:00 pm

  8. Accommodation in tents

Distance: 7.2 km

  1. Trek Day 4  ‘Rest Day’

  2. Breakfast 9:00 am

  3. We don’t pack up camp but rest the full day. There is the opportunity to explore the peaks around and the Chunli Lake.

  4. Lunch 12:30 pm (cooked meal at the camp site)

  5. Dinner 6:00 pm

  6. Accommodation in tents

‘REST DAY!’

  1. Trek Day 5:

  2. Breakfast 7:00 am

  3. -Pack up and start Trekking 9:00 am

  4. The whole day is downhill! but it can be really hard work! steady walking down grassy hillsides to the village of Peishe.

  5. Lunch 12:30 pm (on the track)

  6. -Arrive Camp 4/Peishe Village - 4:00 pm (Elevation: 2820m) The night will be spent either in tents just outside the village or in on of the Peishe homes. The horse guides will leave with the horses an head home in the evening.

  7. Dinner after set up 6:00 pm

  8. Accommodation in tents or in a Home in Peishe Village.

Height dropped from last night: 1175 m

Distance: 11.8 km

  1. Trek Day 6:

  2. Breakfast 8:00 am

  3. -Pack up and Load up the Tractor 9:30 am

  4. The walk today is a short walk down from Peishe to the valley bottom where we meet the bus. (Elevation: 2300m)

  5. Lunch 1:30 pm (in Heishui town)

  6. -Afternoon rest or explore the town.

  7. Dinner 6:00 pm

  8. Accommodation in Heishui, good (2-3 star) Nice hot showers!

Walk time! 1-2 hrs

Height dropped from last night: 520 m

Distance: 2.3 km

  1. -Leave Heishui to Marerkang 6:00 am

  2. Marerkang is the capital of the region. The road there goes over a 4200m pass with some great views (this is only possible between May and Oct). (Marerkang’s elevation: 2620m)

  3. Lunch on the road or late lunch in Marerkang.

  4. Before dinner we will walk up to the Bon monastery on the hill for those who are interested.

  5. Dinner and Night in Marerkang

  6. Accommodation in Marerkang is similar to Heishui

Bus time! 5-6 hrs

  1. -Leave Marerkang 6:00 am

  2. Lunch on the road

  3. -Arrive Chengdu late afternoon

  4. Dinner and Night in Chengdu

  5. Accommodation if not requested otherwise will be 3 star standard, however full range is available (basic to 5 star)

Bus time! 8-10 hrs

  1. -Leave hotel 7:00 am to see the Panda’s

  2. For those who want to rise early a morning at the Panda research center will be possible. Opens at 8:00 am and if you haven’t seen the Panda’s its well worth a visit.

  3. Lunch in Chengdu

  4. Depending on departure time further plans will be arranged.
